How to Bleed Brakes
There’s no question about it. Your brakes are true lifesavers. If you’ve ever been driving around Chicago, Skokie, and Park Ridge, there have probably been a few times where your brakes saved your bacon.
If you’ve been pressing down on those brakes lately and aren’t getting the response you expect, it may be time to bleed your brakes. Why Bleed Your Brakes?
Bleeding the brakes involves a few different steps, so you’ll want to be sure you’ve gathered up all the needed equipment in advance, which includes an assistant. You’ll have to start by supporting the vehicle, so jack it up using the jack stands and remove all four wheels. Find the caliper bleeding screws, spray them with some oil, then loosen them up using a brake bleeder wrench or combo wrench. Tighten the screws when done–but not too tight.
After tightening the screws, check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder. If the fluid levels appear to be low, new fluid will have to be added. Check out your owner’s manual, which lets you know how to add the fluid and which fluid should be used.
Fit a piece of clear tubing over the bleeder screw, and then place the other end in a catch basin or a container, like a jar or a bucket.
Finishing the Process
With the engine off, have someone pump the brake pedal until they begin to feel some pushback. Whoever is helping should let you know when the pressure has increased and the pedal has become firm. While applying pressure, open the bleeder screw, allowing the fluid to flow through the tubing.
Make sure that your assistant lets you know when the brake pedal is about to be released, so the bleeder screw can be tightened. The process may need to be repeated. There should be no air bubbles coming out with the fluid. This should be done for each brake location. Tighten the screws, put the wheels back on, and you’re ready to go.
